Summer

“Summer was on the way; Jem and I awaited it with impatience. Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the tree house; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape; but most of all, summer was Dill.”

Dear CAL Gals,

June 3 was the last board meeting before the summer hiatus. It was lovely thanks to the Shawna Parry offering her home with its great views and the rest of us bringing too much food for a potluck lunch. It was Shawna’s and Karen Wallis’ last meeting: Shawna, because she was ready to hand over our financial matters after a mere 6 years, and Karen because she is building a new house and working full-time. We will miss them both, but new treasurer, Lynn Shearer and new publicity chair, Marilyn Haddad ably fill their positions.

We have a couple more events to support before the real two month summer starts. Linda Zinn and friends are busily organizing the Dover Dog Walk fundraiser for our local cancer services organization. It is June 27 so please plan to spend an hour with your favorite dog. I wouldn’t want you dog to find out that you didn’t take him to this once a year event. There is nothing worse than a pouty dog.

Of course the annual 4th of July parade wouldn’t be the same without the presence of a large cadre of those women of the Community Assistance League. Be sure to sign up to march at our next meeting. Linda Zinn will also be asking for help decorating the float. She is so creative that I can’t wait to see how she presents the parade theme, “Honoring Our Heroes.” After the parade we get to relax in the shade of Joyce Spiller’s lovely garden and eat BBQ hamburgers. It really is a fun day.

We will be hearing from some of our scholarship recipients at the June 17 meeting. As a high school teacher, I used to tear up at every graduation ceremony watching all of those fresh, bright, talented young people head off to the next episode in what I hoped would be full and good lives. I get that feeling again at this meeting. I am just so enthralled by the caliber of children this community raises. It is wonderful to see us helping them along.

I will not be seeing you at the next meeting. Months before I knew I would be president, I had arranged to go on an African safari (camera) with 11 friends. I will be leaving soon. I want to thank you for being so supportive of me this last year. I have had so much fun being the president of this organization. I hope some of that rubbed off on you over the year. Have a safe, relaxing, and fun summer, but don’t forget that BIZARRE BAZAAR NEEDS YOU!

FYI - Madeline McClellan’s Starfire Iris & Peony Garden opens this weekend June 5 & and continue until June 14. The gardens are beautiful and in full bloom for you to enjoy along with a lovely tea house. There are potted plants and garden art available for purchase. The address is 140 Starfire Way, 5 1/2 miles east of Highway 95 on Sagle Rd. There is a flower stand with fresh bouquets as you turn on her road.
